Employee stories
Anastassiya - Senior Certification Engineer, UK
As a Kazakh native living in the UK and working in Rotork’s Bath factory, Senior Certification Engineer Anastassiya Fixel knows what it’s like to work in a different language from her native tongue. But it was the common language of engineering that drew her into the field.
“Engineering for me has always been about mathematics,” she said. “I was drawn to the elegance of it, the science behind it, the universal language of it, the constant learning and development. That’s what keeps me excited.”
Reflecting on this year’s International Women in Engineering Day theme – #EngineeringIntelligence – Anastassiya highlights the importance of individuality.
“I think it's about bringing your authentic self to the profession,” she said. “It is about how you collaborate, how you ask questions, how you learn and how you personally develop to keep up with the field.
“Technology gives us more speed, more data, the ability to act fast and make decisions quickly. It can process information and map out options. However, people bring collaboration, diverse perspectives and the judgement needed to solve the right problems.”
Anyone considering a career in engineering, Anastassiya says, needs to prioritise being their true self. “This is the value AI and other tools can’t offer,” she said.
“What I’ve realised with STEM is that you don't have to be an inventor or a traditional designer. The variety of roles suit a variety of personalities and characters. We don't just need more brains, we need different kinds of brains. So, for me, one of the key aspects of working in engineering is bringing your own personality and your true self to the role.”
